Victory over Turkiye in their only game of the sixth day of competition at the LGT World Curling Championship in Korea has ensured that Scotland’s women have a great chance of both securing Team GB’s place at next year’s Winter Olympics and reaching the play-offs.
A commanding 10-6 win for Rebecca Morrison, Jen Dodds, Sophie Sinclair and Sophie Jackson saw the Scots move on to a record of six wins and four losses heading into the final day of round-robin competition.
That effectively pitches them into a mini league in mid-table with China – six wins four losses - and Denmark – five wins five losses – with the three teams all meeting one another on the last day of round-robin action.
The win over Turkiye was their fourth in a row and the result was in little doubt after the first three ends as the Scots generated a steal of three at the opener then, after forcing their opponents to take just one at the second, scored another three at the third end to move into a 6-1 lead.
From that point they managed the scoreboard effectively until the Turkish women accepted that a deficit of 10-6 meant there was no point in playing the 10th end.
“We had a great start to that game by stealing three in the first end which really put us in control from there,” said Scottish skip Jackson.
“The Turkish team still pushed us to make some precise shots at times to stay ahead and take the win in that game.”
Scotland are now strongly positioned to secure the points required to ensure that Team GB will be at the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina and, currently sitting sixth in the standings their momentum is such that they know they have a strong chance of maintaining that position to make it to the knockout stages at this Championship.
“It feels great to still have our play-off hopes in our own hands against two teams that are also in contention,” said Jackson.
“We’ll head into both games as we have the other games though, focusing on ourselves and not the opposition.”
Denmark and China both also face teams in Switzerland and Canada respectively, that have already qualified for the play-offs, but are battling for more favourable positions, but the Scots are determined to sort things out for themselves.
“We know that play-offs is a really good spot to get to for GB’s Olympic qualification so we are really focusing on that being our goal, rather than looking elsewhere at what other teams are doing,” said Jackson.
The LGT World Championship is taking place in the Uijeongbu Ice Rink from March 15-23.
