Comfortable victories over New Zealand and Mongolia saw Scotland’s Team Henderson maintain a 100 per cent record after three rounds of competition and set up a potential group decider with similarly unbeaten Hungary on the third day of competition at the World Junior B Championships in Finland.
The championship set-up in Lohja sees the 24 competing teams split into four qualifying groups ahead of play-offs which will decide which three progress to the World Junior A Championship in the New Year and Fay Henderson, Robyn Munro, Holly Wilkie-Milne and Laura Watt are satisfied with their performance so far as they build into the event.
All the more so because they were sufficiently in command in their second match of the day to be able to give their fifth player, Amy Mitchell a taste of the action.
“We had quite a tight game against New Zealand,” said skip Henderson.
“We scored well early with hammer and managed to force ones which meant we had good control of the game before we blanked the sixth and seventh, which meant we had control of the hammer and could run them out of stones, which was nice.
“Mongolia were a younger team and we registered an 11-1 win and managed to get Amy on to throw a few shots as well which was nice for her to get her first championship experience.”
Henderson’s own maturity was demonstrated in the way she saw the bigger picture of the meetings with two nations that are relatively new to the global stage and the implications that has for her sport.
“We’ve never faced either New Zealand or Mongolia before and it’s nice to see countries from all over the world competing in a championship like this,” she observed.
“It shows how far the sport’s spread and how publicity in recent years has helped. It’s something that’s important.”
However, her focus remains fully on what is good for Scotland in the short-term as she and her teammates look to secure their place in the decisive matches at the end of the week.
“Two wins today and three overall is a pretty good start and we’re all playing pretty well and looking to keep our form going in the last two round-robin games,” said Henderson.
“Hopefully that’’ll help with what’s ahead and if we get another win over Hungary tomorrow it’ll put us in a nice position, but obviously we just want to win every game.”
