Convincing victories over Australia and the Czech Republic saw Scotland’s Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie maintain a 100 per cent record after three rounds of matches to sit joint top of the Group B standings at the World Mixed Doubles Championships in Geneva.
The Olympic medal winning partners followed up on their opening day win over England with two matches which took on a similar shape as they were made to work hard early on before pulling away emphatically in the second half.
Against the Australians in the day’s opener, they were tied at 2-2 after four ends, before registering a four at the mid game break on their way to a 9-4 win.
Then later in the day they started without the hammer for the first time and fell behind for the first time in any of their matches so far when the Czechs scored a two at the second end.
However with Muirhead’s stats showing her shot execution at 100 per cent throughout the match, with Lammie not far behind, they responded to that immediately, stole shots at the next two ends and wrapped up the 9-3 victory with a four at the seventh end which drew the concession.
Tied on three wins with the USA and Canada they now know that something has to give when the sport’s oldest international rivalry is renewed in their only match of day three.
“It’s great to have three wins under the belt at this stage with no losses, but I know tomorrow’s going to be tough up against Canada who are also unbeaten,” said Muirhead.
“Scotland-Canada’s always a big crunch match, but we’re definitely finding our rhythm and we’re enjoying ourselves out there.”
The proximity to home and the relaxation of lockdown rules has brought added benefits in the level of support as has the staging of the World Seniors Championship in an adjacent arena.
“It’s nice to see a few Scotland fans in the stands and to see the senior men and women coming in to support us as well, so we’re hoping to go and support them too,” said Muirhead.
“The first experience of this event has been good for Bobby and me. It’s very different and something new for us and we’re enjoying it.”
