Team Henderson secured Scotland’s place at the World Junior Championship when they won their semi-final clash with Turkiye on the final day’s play at the B event, which doubles as a qualifying competition, in Finland.
They subsequently suffered the disappointment of missing out on gold medals when they were beaten by Canada in the final, but that victory over the Turks had meant they could go into that match relatively relaxed, knowing they had avoided the bronze medal play-off that decided who would claim the final berth at the World Juniors.
“We have had a really positive day with that win against Turkiye,” said skip Fay Henderson.
“The first few ends were quite simple with runs through and then after that we started to play more for the scoreboard.
“So we managed to get steals in four and five which really helped us to shift the momentum and obviously it was still quite a tight game until the last couple of ends when we managed to get a 7-2 win.
“The steal of two in the fifth end was definitely key and then we just managed to make a really good end in seven and finish it off with a three and that resulted in handshakes.”
The subsequent loss to Canada was the first of the week for Fay Henderson, Robyn Munro, Holly Wlkie-Milne, Laura Watt and their alternate Amy Mitchell, but Henderson believes their performances have set them in good stead for the step up the World Junior Championship in Germany.
“In the Canada game we did create a few chances and it was just a few missed shots which saw us just struggle a little bit and cost us the game,” said Henderson.
“Obviously we will play them again at the World A’s and we have fulfilled our main objective which was to qualify for the World Juniors in Fuessen.
“Hopefully knowing the standard we can reach this week in Finland will give us really good confidence heading into the A’s.
“I think it puts a stamp down too because the field was quite strong and especially coming through the play-offs which meant that we could really say that the three teams that have qualified will definitely be able to give the teams at the A event a run for their money as the standard was very similar.
“So we are heading home for Christmas now, but we are looking forward to that trip to Fuessen in February.”
The World Junior Championships in Fuessen, Germany take place from 25 February – 4 March 2023.
