A dominant performance from Team Henderson saw them lift the Asham U21 title in Edinburgh after beating Team Mitchell 7-3 in the final yesterday. In a week celebrating Scottish women and girls in sport, they started the week as they finished it, with wins in the Czech and then the Scottish capital.
The British Curling Performance Foundation quartet of Fay Henderson, Holly Wilkie-Milne, Robyn Munro and Laura Watt had also claimed success on Scottish ice prior to their Prague European Junior Curling Tour (EJCT) title win, when they won the Asham U21 event in Greenacres, a run of events providing them with an early season hat-trick as they hone their preparations as a new unit for the Scottish Juniors, one of their key goals in the year ahead.
“Another strong performance this weekend sees us win our second U21 Slam of the season and it gives us good confidence as these are the teams that we will meet at the Scottish Junior Championships and this is the last time we will play against them before those champs, so getting those key wins and a few high scores helps keep us in front,” said skip Fay Henderson.
“We had a couple of close ends where we were under pressure but we have had to work together and just get through that. We are heading out to Sundyberg soon and obviously as a new team, the results we have had show that we have gelled really well and hopefully we can keep building on that going forward.
“Regarding Scottish women and girls in sport month, for me it is inspiring to be inside the NCA training alongside some of the top athletes in the country and easily the world, which obviously motivates us to work that little bit harder as you know that everything that British Curling is doing is leading to success.
“I would also like to think that even from just us competing at the U21’s obviously we have quite a bit of the season to go and a number of events coming up, but I would like to think that we would also inspire some of the younger girls coming through, maybe to just look up to us and hope that one day they could also to be in the British Curling programme with all the support staff and then obviously go beyond that too.
“I think it is looking up to the success of others in the programme and the way they work shows us what we need to do and to get some of the invites to events they get would be ideal one day. We are pleased with how this season is going and hopefully we can continue that and with Robyn at the World Mixed Championships we want to wish her and all of the team the best of luck before we are back together again for our competition in Sweden.”
