Scotland skip Rebecca Morrison was determined to focus on the positives following a challenging third day of action at the Le Gruyere European Curling Championships which saw her team lose 10-4 to Italy and 11-6 to Denmark.
The defeat at the hands of the unbeaten Danes was particularly hard to take after they fought back from an early 4-1 deficit to lead 5-4 at the midway break, only to have the match taken away from them in the second half.
Even after they lost a three at the ninth end to fall 9-6 behind their heads never dropped and Morrison had a slender chance to produce a double with her final shot which would have taken the match into overtime, but it slid narrowly wide of its target.
“We had a good fightback against Denmark and had a shot to take it to an extra end, so we really stuck in there and it was a good fight,” she said afterwards.
“It’s disappointing to come away with two losses today, but we have so much good stuff to take from today. There were some great shots played out there and it was a good game.”
Morrison, Gina Aitken, Sophie Sinclair and Sophie Jackson had won their opening two matches before suffering their first defeat at the hands of the Italians earlier in the day.
“It’s important that we don’t let the two losses today define our championship,” said their skip.
“We’re not even halfway through the round-robin yet, so we’ve still got a long way to go and we’re still completely in the mix.”
They face another two games on day four, meeting hosts and former Olympic champions Sweden, before taking on Germany.
“I’m sure tomorrow’s going to be another tough day against two solid teams, but if we can just string some of the good stuff we produced today together we stand a great chance out there,” said Morrison.
The European Championships qualify teams for next year’s World Curling Championships with the women’s event (LGT World Women’s Curling Championship 2023) also taking place in Sweden in March (18-26 March) and the men’s event (BKT Tires & OK Tire World Men’s Curling Championship) in Ottawa in April (1-9 April).
Men’s teams: Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Norway, Scotland, Spain (replacing Russia), Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
