Having begun their LGT World Women’s Championship campaign in spectacular fashion with victory over Canada’s defending champions, Scotland suffered two painful defeats on the second day of round-robin action, losing 8-7 to Norway and 5-4 to hosts Korea.
Rebecca Morrison, Jen Dodds, Sophie Sinclair and Sophie Jackson, who are supported at this event by fifth player Fay Henderson, were never able to get their noses in front of Marianne Roervik’s Norwegians in their first game of the day.
There was very little to separate the teams as Norway scored twos at the second and fourth ends which were matched by the Scots at the third and fifth.
A third two for Norway seemed to give them the upper hand when they then forced their opponents to just a single at the seventh end.
The Scots responded by holding them to one at the eighth before levelling the match for a third time with a two at the ninth, but that left Norway with last stone advantage going down the last of the scheduled10 ends and they took advantage to clinch the win.
While the scoring was lower, the meeting with Korea followed a similar route with the home team stealing at the second end to move into a lead and never trailing thereafter.
This time around, the Scots produced a two at the 10th end to take the match into extra time, but once again their opponents were able to capitalise on last stone advantage, their skip Eunji Gim drawing deep into the eight foot rings to wrap up the win.
“Although we are disappointed to come away from day two with two losses I am proud of the way the girls stuck in there in both games,” said Jackson, who is skipping the Scotland team.
“Particularly our evening draw against Korea, we were able to turn around a slightly slack first half to force the Koreans to make their last stone in an extra end.
“Our key take away from today is that our level of performance is right up there and we know that if we can tighten up on a few key moments that will turn that standard of performances into wins.”
They consequently head into the third day of action knowing they have to be ready to face two more high class opponents in an Italy team skipped by Olympic mixed doubles champion Stefania Constantini and a Swiss team skipped by four time World Champion Silvana Tirinzoni, but believing that they have the capacity to compete with and beat anyone in the field.
“We have met both Italy and Switzerland many times now so we know that we will have another two tough games tomorrow, but games that we are more than confident we can take down to the wire again and hopefully come out on the right side,” said Jackson.
The LGT World Championship is taking place in the Uijeongbu Ice Rink from March 15-23.
