Meggan Dawson-Farrell and Gregor Ewan will be the first wheelchair curlers to represent Scotland at the World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championships, when they get underway tomorrow.
The inaugural event, held at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland (30 April – 5 May), will feature 18 national teams, split into two groups of nine, competing in a round-robin format, ahead of knockout play-offs for the medals.
It is a competition which follows a similar format to the World Mixed Doubles Championships in Geneva, where Olympic medallists Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie led the way in the race to the play-offs as the only unbeaten team among the 20 contesting the round-robin stages and their performance has given a boost to their British Curling colleagues.
“We are really inspired by Eve and Bobby managing to get to the play-offs at their first mixed doubles event,” said Dawson-Farrell, who made her Paralympics debut earlier this year.
“The way they have performed gives us the confidence into our event, to see what we can do, particularly since, as a wheelchair mixed doubles team, we are working in the same environment, training at the same venue as the able-bodied mixed doubles team.”
In echoing that message, three time Paralympian Ewan said they are drawing additionally on the knowledge that their training facilities are the envy of the world.
“Having the National Curling Academy on our doorstep in Scotland does give us a big leg up when it comes to going out and taking on the world’s best teams,” he said.
On-ice communication having been key to the way that Muirhead and Lammie have followed in the footsteps of Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat, the reigning World Mixed Doubles champions whose title they are defending for Scotland, the wheelchair curlers are also focusing on that facet of their game.
“We know that having good communication is very important for us,” said Dawson-Farrell.
“Myself and Gregor work well as a team, so that’s a great base to work from.”
The Scots open their campaign against Switzerland and will also meet Hungary later on the opening day (full schedule below).
