Scotland’s men have continued their winning form claiming their third consecutive victory over title holders China on day five at the World Junior Championships to force themselves back into play-off contention.
In a tightly fought battle, Orrin Carson, younger brother Logan, Archie Hyslop and Charlie Gibb started with last stone advantage and made that count, getting them off to an ideal start.
“We had a great draw shot today which gave us the hammer,” he said.
“We blanked the first and got a nice two at the second and although they got a two at the third, I still felt we were in control throughout the whole match and managed to see out the win at the end and I think we played really well.
“The two in the ninth end I felt was the real turning point as they were on for a good four or a steal until we made good draws with the last two, which gave us a nice lead going into the tenth end and I think we saw it out from there.”
Carson feels his team is growing in confidence as they become ever more familiar with the conditions.
“I think we are adapting to the ice all the time and I think we are now finding our groove,” he said.
“Ever since Monday it feels like we have been playing really well and we have continued that on and finally getting some wins on the board.”
The first match in the final day of the round robin has the added element of a renewal of the rivalry between Carson’s younger brother and vice skip Logan who led Team GB to victory at last month’s Winter Youth Olympics with the beaten skip in the event Denmark’s Jacob Schmidt, before they face table toppers Norway in their final pool game.
“Both matches coming up will be tough, we think one win will secure us in the A division and obviously we are looking for two wins to try and be among the play-off spots. We face Denmark first and hopefully we will get the win there and then see where we can go after that,” said the skip.
In the women’s event Team Munro were already struggling to reach the play-offs ahead of their first match of the day which they lost narrowly to China at an extra end. They then played Norway and lost out 7-4 to leave themselves on a 2W – 6L record. The Scottish women play Korea tomorrow in their final round robin match.
The competition takes place in Lohja from February 17 to 24.
