Having won the event on both their first and most recent visits, World champions Team Mouat will defend their Stu Sells Oakville Tankard title after a two year wait this weekend.
It is a competition that has the fondest memories for Bruce Mouat, Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan, whose victory in 2017, immediately after they formed as a team, served notice of what was to come in the ensuing years.
“The boys and I are really looking forward to getting back to Oakville,” said skip Mouat.
“It has been a couple of years now and we won it in 2021 because they were renovating last year I believe, so didn’t host the event.
“Their ice is always really good and some of the best ice we get to play on each year, so we are very excited to get back and hopefully retain the title.
“We have some history there with that being the first event ever played as a team so it is always nice to get back there and see what we can do.”
While they have sometimes taken time to ease their way into a new season, Mouat’s men made a flying start to this campaign when they won their only competition of the season so far, on home ice in the Euro Super Series (ESS) at the National Curling Academy in Stirling last month.
They are consequently looking to carry that form into this trip to Canada, where they won their world title back in April, as they bid to return to the number one spot in the world rankings.
“It’s been a good start to our season obviously, with the win at ESS and we are looking to continue that momentum and it would be nice to build up a bit of a run at the start of the season and bank those points early,” said Mouat.
“We are in a really good spot so far so pretty happy. The field that we are playing in at the two events over here are pretty strong, so its always nice to put yourself up against those teams.
“It should be pretty hotly contested with a lot of decent European teams coming over to this event as well. It’s great to be back in Canada and competing in these events.”
Accompanying them in the draw at both this weekend’s event (Sept 7-10) and next week’s Shorty Jenkins Classic are their world number eight ranked British Curling colleagues Team Whyte, whom they edged out in the final of the Euro Super Series.
Meanwhile, Team Ross Craik will be competing at the European Junior Curling Tour in St Gallen.
