World number one skip Bruce Mouat has explained how good-natured teasing has led to the adoption of the headwear that has become his trademark.
The 27-year-old, who will lead his men’s team into action next week, went bare-headed into the first three matches of this week’s Mixed Doubles in which he is playing with lifelong friend Jen Dodds.
He was unhappy with his form, however, so reverted to pulling on a baseball cap, which proved a lucky charm for him last year when his team made history by winning back-to-back Grand Slam titles in bubble conditions in Calgary and reckons that has helped him get back towards his best in his team’s wins over Australia and the Czech Republic.
“We were playing the Champions Cup final in the bubble in Calgary last year and I was just having a bad hair day. The commentators were teasing me for having quiffs and stuff in my hair, so the next day I put the hat on,” he explained, with a laugh.
“Someone then made a Twitter account – Bruce Mouat’s Hat – so I just kept it going and they got more Twitter followers on that than I’ve got on my own account.”
Happy to join in the fun at his own expense, Mouat suggested he is likely to stick with it from this point on.
“It’s just a wee bit of a superstition now. I didn’t play very well in the first three games and was disappointed with that, then put the hat on and it’s got super-powers apparently.
“It’s maybe a vanity thing because my hair’s all over the place, so this covers it up so that people don’t worry about my hair and I don’t either.”
