Former World champion Bobby Lammie and his new mixed doubles partner Rebecca Morrison made it two tournament wins in the space of a week for the Scottish contingent that made the trip to Switzerland to compete in Gstaad and Bern.
In a fiercely contested final, they claimed an 8-7 win over stablemates and Lammie’s fellow former World champions Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat, who had also gone through the Bern event undefeated to that point on the back having won the Gstaad event earlier in the week.
As had also been the case in Gstaad, three of the five Scottish pairs had reached the semi-finals in Bern where current national champions Sophie Jackson and Duncan McFadzean lost 7-6 to Lammie and Morrison, while Dodds and Mouat were beating Norway’s world number two ranked Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten 7-5 in a re-match of the Gstaad final.
Morrison consequently expressed satisfaction on behalf of her team and the British Curling programme teams as a whole as she reflected on the win.
“We had a great week both in Gstaad and here in Bern, so we went into the final there with a lot of confidence that we were both making a lot of shots and that, if we kept that up, it was going to be a well-fought match with Bruce and Jen which would come down to a few crucial moments and that’s how it went,” said Morrison.
“We definitely feel that we’ve made a mark on the mixed doubles scene as a new pairing in our first outing on the tour.
“We’ve played a few games in the National Curling Academy against the other British Curling teams, but this was really good to see how we stack up against the international teams and after a good couple of competitions here in Switzerland we certainly have our eyes on bigger things for the rest of the season.”
She believes that the two Swiss events have set the Scottish teams up well for forthcoming challenges in the last full season ahead of selection for the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina in 2026.
“It was great to see so many Scottish teams in the playoff stages in both competitions,” said Morrison.
“We are putting a heavier focus on mixed doubles this season and it shows that the work we are putting in is paying off.”
“We’re looking forward to the Scottish Championships in December and a tour competition in Gothenburg between Christmas and New Year and hope we can continue the success we have had so far.”
