Team GB’s Mixed Doubles pair picked up where their teammates left off at the Winter Youth Olympics in Korea as Ethan Brewster and Callie Soutar made the ideal start to their campaign in the Gangneung Arena.
A five at the opening end of their meeting with Nigeria demonstrated their readiness for the event and the one-sided match was over in just six of the scheduled eight ends as they raced to a 15-0 win.
Setting out just two days after compatriots Logan Carson, Tia Laurie, Archie Hyslop and Holly Burke had won Team GB’s first ever Youth Olympic curling gold medal, they drew on that experience.
“It gave us a lot of confidence seeing them win gold the other day,” said 16-year-old Aberdonian Brewster.
“Hopefully we can do the exact same thing as they did and now we’ve been on the ice, I feel pretty confident in what we can do.”
They are coached by Scott Andrews, a teammate of Brewster’s father Tom when they won a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and Soutar, the youngest member of the Team GB curling squad at the Games, said that being able to lean on his knowhow has been invaluable.
“Scott’s a great coach,” she said.
“He’s really supportive, which really helps us as a team and he brings a lot of experience on the bench, so it’s great to have him with us.”
That will hopefully stand them in good stead for what awaits them in their next match, since they know they will be facing an unprecedented environment when they come up against hosts Korea in their second round-robin match.
“The crowd will be super loud, but it will be a great experience to play in that atmosphere and a real learning opportunity for us,” said Soutar.
“We’ve not really played in front of big crowds before, so we’re looking forward to that opportunity and we’ll hopefully manage to stay focused.”
