Team Henderson made it three successive tournament wins as they edged out Norway’s Team Oce/Neas 4-3 in a hard-fought final at the Prague Junior Cup.
The victory was their second in succession on the European Junior Curling Tour, after a win in St Gallen last month and their third in all, having sandwiched their trips to the continent with another success on home ice in the Greenacres Junior Masters.
“Becoming back-to-back EJCT winners and a win at Greenacres as well in between times has just made the start of our season brilliant having played against so many quality teams, especially out in Europe,” said skip Fay Henderson.
“It’s good to get so many wins against teams from different nationalities to show that on the international stage we can perform well.”
As they had done at Greenacres, they went through the event unbeaten, cruising through their pool with big wins against Hungarian, Czech and Romanian opposition, before they eased Germany’s Team Messenzehl Sara aside in the semi-final to win through to the decider against the Norwegians who were also unbeaten to that point.
That proved a very different encounter, with little between the teams until Henderson struck the crucial blow just before the halfway mark.
“We had a few challenges with the ice here and there, but I think we got on top of it and we knew how to manage it, which worked in our favour towards the end against the more experienced teams,” said Henderson.
“The standard was very good. We had some tough games against very good teams that we managed to see out and some of them quite comfortably.
“A couple of them were very tight, especially the final. We just traded ones and we managed to get a steal at the fourth end which ultimately made the difference, so it was difficult to separate the teams, but when it came down to it at the last end we managed to keep cool and manage pretty well to round off a great weekend.”
She and her team have their sights set on the World Junior Championships as their principal target for the season and she believes they are very much on track.
“Two wins away from home really puts your name out there and it shows that what we’re doing back at home with the support we’re getting from British Curling is really putting us in the right mindset and everything they’re doing is really helping us,” said Henderson.
“Another really good win on the European Junior Curling Tour has given us great confidence and we’re all really pleased with how we performed.”
