ParalympicGB’s wheelchair curlers put up a strong fight against Norway in their opening match at the Winter Paralympics in Beijing but lost out 7-5 to the 2018 finalists.
The more experienced Norwegian quartet made the stronger start, opening up a 4-1 lead after three ends, but after being forced to take just one at the fourth, ParalympicsGB battled back with a steal of two at the fifth end to level the match.
The Norwegians then responded in kind after they were forced at the sixth, but then crucially stole a two at the seventh to open up a three shot lead for the second time in the match and ParalympicsGB could score no more than a single at the eighth and final end.
“We had a debrief after that game and it was the first ever game for Meggan and David at that level at a Paralympics Games on the biggest stage and things like that so it took a little while for us all to settle in,” said skip Hugh Nibloe.
“We had a good 5th end break chat and that really helped and Gregor played a great shot that got a one for us at the 4th end rather than give up a steal so we were only two behind at that stage and we knew we were in with a chance and Sheila (Swan – Head Paralympic Coach) said keep working hard and keep focusing on making shots and get back in it.
“Overall the first four ends were not great from us and we came back a bit. It was not enough, but we have all got the first game out of the way and we are ready to go for the next one today against the USA
“The USA are a very good team and they finished fourth at the world championships and they have a few experienced heads in among them and I am looking forward to us playing them and they are good guys and it will be a good game. “
