Like their gold medal winning teammates before them, Team GB’s Mixed Doubles pair Ethan Brewster and Callie Soutar suffered defeat in the second match of their campaign at the Winter Youth Olympics in Korea, but are looking to recover quickly after a heavy loss to the hosts.
Starting without last stone advantage the British youngsters did a good job at the opening end of restricting their opponents to just one, but conceded steals of two at each of the next two ends to find themselves under pressure.
It was not until the sixth end when, already 6-0 down, they finally got on the scoreboard with a two, but the Koreans then scored a three at the next to put paid to any thoughts of a comeback.
“They played really well,” said Soutar.
“The whole game they shot really, really high, so that was tough to play against.
“We just had a few half shots which they capitalised on, which led to that result.”
She believes they can draw on what happened in last week’s Mixed Team event, when their compatriots were beaten, before going unbeaten through the rest of the campaign in claiming a first ever Winter Youth Olympics curling gold medal for Team GB.
“It’s pretty good motivation for us, that they lost their second game as well, just like us, so hopefully we’ll follow on that path and bounce back and dominate the rest of the competition and hopefully win gold,” said Soutar.
They also have an opportunity to learn from the elevated experience of playing in front of a passionate home support in the Gangneung Arena as they look to get back on track when they face the Czech Republic.
“It was pretty tough with the home crowd always cheering for the Korean stones and they were making a lot of shots, so it felt like every second we were hearing the Korean crowd,” said Brewster.
“I don’t think it changed the game too much, though and hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow after that loss.”
