Scotland’s Team Carson got off to a winning start beating Canada 9-4 in their opening game at the World Junior Championships in Finland.
Skip Orrin Carson, younger brother and vice skip Logan, Archie Hyslop and Charlie Gibb started with last stone advantage and made that count as they registered a two at the opening end, then drove home that advantage with steals of two and one at the next two.
Canada did eventually get off the mark at the fourh end and after the midway break they applied further pressure, claiming their only multiple score with a steal of two at the eighth end when Carson’s attempted draw to the button pulled up short
However, that was not enough to shift the momentum and the Scots claimed a two at the next to take the win.
“I knew that as soon as we had hammer we would go for the two straight away so it got us off to a good start and we never really looked back from there,” said the young skip from Dumfries.
“I think we played really well apart from the eighth end, but I felt like we were really in control throughout and played a really good first half after getting off to a flying start, so I think this result really sets the tone for the rest of the week.
“I think we were possibly a bit more nervous starting this year than last.
“That may be because we did quite well last year and maybe now there is a bit more expectation on us and we are still quite young, but we wanted to start well this time and I am glad we came through and did that.
“We have a two game day tomorrow against Italy and the USA – who played each other today - and we are really looking forward to that, so will take it a game at a time and see how it goes.”
In the women’s event Robyn Munro, Laura Watt, Holly Wilkie-Milne and Amy Mitchell are looking to bounce back after losing out 6-4 to Germany and 5-8 to Japan later in the day. They play Turkiye tomorrow.
The competition takes place in Lohja from February 17 to 24.
