Scotland’s Team Carson earned their place on the podium for the second time in three years at the World Junior Championships when they defeated Korea 7-2 in the bronze medal match in Cortina.
It was a superb response from the all-teenage quartet of Orrin and Logan Carson, Archie Hyslop and Charlie Gibb, following the disappointment of their narrow 7-6 semi final defeat to Norway’s defending champions just yesterday and at the end of a competition that was doubling as a test event for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, their skip Orrin Carson was delighted with their overall performance.
“We are very proud of our efforts this week and obviously especially today to come away with a bronze medal,” said the 19 year old.
“We are really, really happy with that and while it was not what we wanted this week we are glad that we could bounce back after a tough loss yesterday.”
The opening stages of the third place play-off were extremely hard fought with two blanked ends and both teams forced to single scores at the other two.
The deadlock was then broken just ahead of the midway break when the Scots registered the three that out them on course for the win.
“The first few ends were probably a bit cagey and we were just trying to keep it open and both teams weren’t really taking the game on too much, but we saw our opportunity in end five,” said Carson.
“That fifth end was really good from us, We played a perfect end and got a couple of misses that we needed and managed to walk away with a good score of three and we kept on from half time, built a lead and never looked back from there so happy with the way that worked out.”
Having won bronze on their debut at this event in 2023, coupled with the experience of missing out on a medal last year when they finished sixth, Carson is pleased with their week’s work, knowing that they still have time on their side for another world title chance should they qualify next year.
“This one is possibly not a special as your first ever medal at a Worlds but we are still extremely happy with our week and the fact that we are able to bring something back with us is really rewarding,” he said.
“We obviously haven’t quite got to a final yet and we haven’t managed to get over that hurdle so hopefully next year if we can win the Scottish Juniors again we can maybe give ourselves a chance of competing in a world final one day.
“But for now we will enjoy the celebrations and we are really just so happy just now with our efforts this week.”
Hosts Italy claimed gold in the men’s final following a 9-5 defeat of last year’s title holders Norway.
Orrin Carson will be back in action next month when he teams up with Robyn Munro to represent Scotland at the inaugaural Booster Juice World Junior Mixed Doubles Championships in Edmonton, Canada (6-11 May).
