Scotland’s Team Carson dominated from the off as they inflicted a comprehensive 8-1 defeat on Norway’s defending champions to maintain their 100 per cent record after three days of competition at the World Junior Championships in Cortina.
After winning the pre-match draw shot challenge to start with the hammer, the Scots made the ideal start, blanking the opening end, then getting their two at the second and they sustained the pressure over the next two ends to claim steals at both and move into a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Norwegians finally got on the scoreboard at the last end before the midway break, but a three on the resumption took the Scots 7-1 clear and when they stole again at the next their opponents offered their hands.
“It was a very big advantage to start with the hammer and we managed to utilise that with a blank at the first end,” said Scotland skip Orrin Carson.
“We then got a two in end two, so it was a perfect start for us and we managed to kick on from there and come up with a really strong performance.
“We came out in the second half firing and managed to get a really good three so that was really good and we managed to see the game out after that.”
Still an all-teenage line-up Carson, his younger brother Logan, Archie Hyslop and Charlie Gibb claimed a bronze medal at this event when they made their debut two years ago, but were disappointed when they missed out last year as Norway, Italy and Denmark claimed the honours.
The learning they have taken from those experiences was consequently clear as Carson urged his men to keep looking to improve and warned that they should not read too much into that result against last year’s gold medallists.
“We can get better as a team and they can get a lot better too obviously,” he said.
“If we play them again later on in the week, which potentially could happen, we know it will be a really tight game and a good battle and we will look forward to that if that happens.”
They now face another of last year’s medallists in their only game of day four.
“We have got another six round robin games to go including Denmark tomorrow night so we will look forward to that and it will be another great game,” said Carson.
“If we play like we did there we will have a great chance in the rest of the games, so hopefully we can continue on with those performances.”
