SCOTLAND’S MEN QUALIFY FOR SEMI FINAL AND FACE RE-MATCH WITH HOSTS AT EUROS

Posted on

Despite suffering a 7-3 defeat to host nation representatives and six time champions Team Edin in their final round robin match, Team Paterson were in jubilant mood after qualifying for the semi finals of the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships in Helsingborg.

The Scots faced a nervous wait following that loss to the Swedes, but their place in the play-offs was secured when Switzerland’s Team Schwaller edged out last year’s bronze medallists Team Retornaz from Italy at an extra end.

“It feels brilliant to be into the semi finals now,” said a relieved Ross Paterson.

“We dropped a few games but we have played a lot of good curling over the course of the week.

“It doesn’t’ matter now how you get here, it is now a new competition from this point on.”

They now face an immediate re-match with Team Edin, who were beaten in last year’s final by Scotland’s Team Mouat and in spite of their defeat in that round robin encounter, Team Paterson can draw confidence from having beaten the Swedes in both their previous meetings this season.

“We have ticked the first box to get qualification, now it is about making the most of this opportunity,” added Paterson.

Switzerland play Denmark in the other semi final.
