SCOTLAND’S MEN TO FACE UNBEATEN HOSTS IN KEY ENCOUNTER AT EUROS

Posted on

Scotland’s men lost out to Switzerland’s Team Schwaller in their penultimate round robin match at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships and must win their final game against unbeaten hosts Sweden tomorrow to be sure of qualification for the semi finals.

Ross Paterson’s rink were tied 2-2 with their opponents by the fourth end, however the Swiss side scored a two at the sixth and a four at the ninth which secured them an 8-3 victory.

The Scots now face Sweden’s Team Niklas Edin who has won the title six times and were runners up to Scotland’s Team Mouat in the event last year. Sweden’s men are the only unbeaten side in the tournament and have secured their place in the semi final with an 8-0 record.

Six teams are now targeting the remaining three qualification places. Scotland, Italy and Switzerland are tied on five wins and three losses, while Denmark, Germany and Norway have four wins and four losses. Paterson’s quartet is determined to be part of the business end of the week.

“We will go out and do everything we can to guarantee our spot in the semi finals,” said Ross Paterson.

“Nobody likes losing and you have to take it when it happens. A missed shot at the sixth end probably changed the momentum of the game, but it certainly felt like we were dominating the first half of that game.

“You have to accept the loss and move on. The team have been playing very well and it is unfortunate we lost, but that is championship curling at this level.”

Despite Sweden holding a 100% record in the championships, Paterson believes that he and his team have reason to feel confident as they head into that final round-robin match.

“We have played Edin’s men twice this season and beaten them twice. So they might have momentum this week, but we have a winning record against them this season and we will use that to push us forward tomorrow,” he said.
