Defending Champions into Grand Slam Semi Final

Team Muirhead are into the semi-final and a step closer to defending their title at the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event after defeating Edmonton’s Team Sweeting at the Meridian Canadian Open in Yorkton.
The Scots made a great start with the hammer scoring in the first end and then stealing shots in each of the next three to gain a comfortable 4-0 lead at the break in the eight end match.
Saskatchewan-born Val Sweeting’s rink fought their way into the match by claiming a three in the fifth and after the Scots could only manage a single in the sixth, they took a two in the seventh to level the match. However Eve Muirhead held her nerve in the final end to claim the 6-5 win with her final stone.
The Olympic bronze medallists now face Team Jones who had a more straightforward journey through their quarter final match, defeating Tracy Fleury’s rink 6-2.
Fellow Olympians Team Murdoch missed out on their chance to progress to the semi-finals after losing 6-3 to Team Carruthers. Murdoch’s quartet opened with the hammer and scored a single but never fully recovered from conceding a three in the second end.
It had, however, been an encouraging week for the Scots, reaching the knockout stages of a Grand Slam event having, on the way to the last eight, beaten Team Jacobs in a re-match of last year’s Olympic final.
