Scotland’s Team Smith has been crowned Edinburgh International Curling Champions 2015 after defeating Team van Dorp from the Netherlands 8-5 in the final of the third event of the Goldline Scottish Curling Tour, at Murrayfield.

Carrying fine form into the 24 team event, having beaten fellow Scots Team Brewster in the final of the recent Euro-Play downs to earn the right to represent their country at the European Championships at the end of this month, they came through a re-match at the quarter final stage this time and ran out convincing 6-1 winners.
They then faced defending champions Finland’s Team Kauste in the semi finals, beating them 7-4 to set up their meeting with the Dutch rink who had claimed a narrow 5-4 win over their fellow Scots Team MacDonald in the other semi final.

In a nip and tuck start to the final the score was 4-4 by the 5th end but a three at the next and a final counter in the eighth end saw the quartet, which comprises Kyle Smith (Skip), Kyle Waddell, Thomas Muirhead and Cammy Smith, take the prestigious title.

Commenting after the final, Smith said, “We are all very pleased with that result, it feels pretty good and this competition was great preparation ahead of the European Championships. We have had a good summer working on technique with our coach Viktor (Kjall) and it feels like all of that hard work is starting to pay off and it is all coming together.

“We got a good grip of the ice, made the most of the good conditions and took our chances and as a team we can defend a lead quite well.”

The 23 year old Perthshire farmer who finished his degree in Agriculture last year added there was no time for celebrations but said, “We are really looking forward to representing Scotland at the Europeans to do the best that we can do.”

The European Championships are being hosted at Esbjerg, Denmark from 20-28 November 2015 where Team Smith and Team Muirhead will be representing Scotland in the men and women’s events respectively.
